He has spent the rest of his life trying musically to find a way back to the peace and quiet of that time by whole-heartedly embracing the space between complete absorption in sound and relative absence of the same.He began playing trumpet professionally at age 13 with his father, and after studying he moved to Colorado where he studied more with Ron Miles, Art Lande, Fred Hess, and improvisation master Jack Wright. His tenure with Jack began to break Nate out of self-imposed molds and into the sound world that he has embraced as his own.
Nate currently resides in Jersey City, NJ and performs solo trumpet improvisations as well as with his trio Blue Collar with Steve Swell and Tatsuya Nakatani. He has also performed regularly with Anthony Braxton, Bhob Rainey, Alessandro Bosetti, Fritz Welch, Herb Robertson, Kevin Norton, Tony Malaby, Randy Peterson, Scott Rosenberg, Matt Moran, Chris Speed, Andrew D’Angelo, Tim Barnes, Okkyung Lee, Assif Tsahar, and other improvisation luminaries.

Gust Burns is a pianist, improviser, and composer based in Seattle, Washington.
Gust is foremost an improvising pianist. He continues to develop new routes into improvisation on the piano, working extensively with ideas concerning form, rhythm, and alternative narrative approaches, as well as new techniques for inside the piano. He also has a pronounced interest in the use of composition and improvisation together, and is usually writing music to this effect.
Gust makes improvised and new music that counts many different perspectives and lines of tradition as influences. Both jazz and classical traditions, the rap and hip-hop music he grew up with, the avant-garde lineages in Europe and America, and the traditions of improvised music over the last 40 years. He has a keen interest in how issues such as intention, practice, community, and musical content effect the role music plays in the socio-political-economic reality; and how this reality effects the music.

Sounds: Father Zosima Presents... He was in local musical group Beans for nine years. Since the bands demise, he has written a handful of pieces for acoustic, electroacoustic, and film soundtrack mediums. He recently returned from a six month residency at the Banff Centre where he wrote a music theatre piece which he hopes to stage soon. He performs semi-regularly in town, usually in low-key "music venues" such as the Access Gallery, Gaff Gallery, and Solder & Sons. With local musician Andrew Herfst, he has recently taken up the activity of playing music at various locations around the city at sunrise. These last types of performances have not been well promoted as of yet, though in the future the two hope to attract the early bird music listening crowd who have been discriminated against with the constant proliferation of "evening performances."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fatherzosimapresents.blogspot.com/2008/03/announcement-father-zosima-presents.html' title='Announcement: Father Zosima Presents... Using home-made synthesizers and magnetic tape as sources, he crafts slowly unfolding drones that hark back to the early minimalist pioneers. Combining obsessive introspection with discreet universality, Ian Gregory's work wanders about on a narrow, well-trodden path of anxious repetition on the infinite plain. He has several self-released cassettes and CD-r's, as well as a release on RunDownSun records.

David Grove approaches sound creation from the primitive stages of synthetic instrumentation. Moving backwards as opposed to forwards in terms of technology, archaic methods are employed to create music with a conscious resistance to modern, digital methods of sound creation. With this strict analog approach, inherent random and unforeseen elements enter his work. As well, there is a characteristic of the labour and physicality involved with analog devices that emerges. David has performed his synthesized music solo and in duets at venues on the west coast of the United States and Canada. He studied visual art at Langara College and is self-taught in electronic audio art forms. He lives and works in Vancouver, BC.

Rachael Wadham has been involved in the Canadian noise/music scene for many years as a performer and composer. Through music she tries hard to enforce her views on recycling with the use of broken instruments, tossed junk and long forgotten songs...wonderful things that have been tossed aside. Rachael has worked and collaborated with artists including Deep Dark United, Picastro, the Fernwood Difficult Music Society, Arraymusic, Ensemble d'Ereprijs, Sound Stories, the Draperies, The Nihilist Spasm Band, triPOD dance collective, neither/nor, and many more. She recently released a couple of duet recordings with Chris Dadge (on the Calgary based label Bug Incision) and Chandan Narayan (on Vancouver based label Standard Grey ). Her current projects are Quaqua, Attn: Diamond Shoppers, Heads over Houses, The Aquatic Uncle, plus frequent small groupings from the large array of improv musicians in Vancouver and beyond.

Robert Pedersen is currently interested in re-wiring cassette players and creating feedback across their entire circuit grids using condenser microphones and prepared amplification. This group of artists, sometimes called the Reductionist school, mix composition and improvisation to form a music for which silence is as potent as sound. Dynamics are important, and part of the aesthetic involves extremely quiet gestures that draw the listener in, focusing the ear on subtle detail. Juxtaposition is a key component, as the expected and the unexpected are deftly employed elements of composition. Krebs, a master of musical texture, may seem more like a sculptor than a guitar player. A classically trained performer, Krebs has radically reinvented the guitar to suit her music.
She lays the guitar—an amplified one—flat on a table and precisely carves out sonic shapes and colors from a variety of objects applied to the instrument. The result is fascinating. A window between action and sound is made clear. Process and composition are revealed. Through amplification, microscopic sound is enlarged, as with a magnifying glass, to become the material for music-making.

Vancouver-based percussionist Jeffrey Allport approaches the physical
nature of his chosen instrument through a variety of preparations and
implements to liberate a unique palette of sounds. Respecting each
carefully extracted tone, thump and scrape in addition to the silence
from which they are borne, his exploratory improvisations inhabit
minute sound worlds, eschewing the grand gesture. In addition to solo
work, Allport has enjoyed a lengthy collaboration with Tim Olive,
releasing three CD’s since 1998. They have also toured in Canada, the
US, Western Europe and Japan. Summer 2007 saw the LP release of his duo with Tetuzi Akiyama, recorded during a small tour of the Northwest in the summer of 2006. Frequently participating in once-only groupings has led him to performing and recording with a wide variety of improvisers, including saxophonist John Butcher, trumpeters Axel Dörner and Greg Kelley, prepared guitar maverick Keith Rowe, harpist Rhodri Davies, and many others.

Performing from 1991–2001 as leader of DIXIE'S DEATH POOL, Lee Hutzulak produced miniature studio epics, characterized by a startling variety of atmospheres, evocative vocals, melodies, and quirky pop hooks. Moving from Victoria to Vancouver in 2000 was the beginning of the end for DDP, and after the release of Soon in 2001 the live ensemble pretty much ceased to exist. Work in the studio continued though: numerous sessions with DDP regulars and a few special guests were crushed, sifted, stirred together and over the course of a couple years crystallized in what The Wire called “A THING OF DELICATE ATMOSPHERIC BEAUTY” — Princess Builder.

Lee's music has always struck a balance between song and sound, combining electro-acoustic ambience, musique concrète, and improvisation. This process generates an ever expanding library of sounds, focusing on texture, tone and space — essential materials of future recordings and mixer based performance. On the flip, a desire to keep it immediate, and perhaps as a reaction to increasingly complex set ups, Hutzulak continues to explore, both as a soloist, and in small improvising ensembles, the acoustic guitar, a few choice effect boxes and all manner of extended technique.

Recent concert highlights include performances at Open Space, the Fifty Fifty in Victoria; the Western Front, Video In, Blim, the Butcher Shop Floor and the OR Gallery in Vancouver.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fatherzosimapresents.blogspot.com/2007/10/announcement-father-zosima-presents.html' title='Announcement: Father Zosima Presents... Two microphones, actively controlled through a mixer are positioned a foot apart and above the table, amplifying the tiniest sonic movements. Lee and Rachael have enjoyed playing and recording together at various venues in both Vancouver (The Cellar, Western Front, The Video In, 1067, WRKS DVSN) and Victoria (The Fifty Fifty).

Glass Plates
Glass Plates are an acoustic improvising trio from Vancouver. What began as Sunday afternoon musings on brief (<3 mins) meditations on texture and timbre, evolved into regular correspondence, recording, and performance. The trio consists of Canadians Jeffrey Allport (on snare and trumpet) and Robert Pedersen (valve trombone), and erstwhile American Chandan Narayan (autoharp). Glass Plates recordings are spare and prized. A 10" ep documenting a 2006 performance at Vancouver's Chroma Books will be available in late 2007.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fatherzosimapresents.blogspot.com/2007/07/father-zosima-presents-thursday-july-26.html' title='Announcement: Father Zosima Presents...
